Previous Planning

I.) First, the candidates should make a previous agreement with his or her supervisor in order to perform the research and with his or her mentor the admission should be assured and a work chronogram, dates and conditions should be defined.

II.) Then, the applicant refers to UNU-BIOLAC for support in his or her research.

UNU-BIOLAC only focuses in trainings at the level of superior education, covering university graduated people from the first, second and third level.

The target group that this Programme supports is constituted by young professionals with academic level from Latin America and the Caribbean. The purpose of this strategy is to contribute with the continuity and applicability of the knowledge and skills acquired during the research and training internships sponsored by the Programme, and also the achievement of a multiplying effect in the institutions where the professional fellows belong to.

UNU-BIOLAC offers fellowships for the research and training topics that are inside the following priority areas:

  • Vector control
  • Bioenergy resources
  • Climate change
  • Emerging tropical diseases
  • Human health
  • Biofuels
  • Agro-biotechnology
  • Bioethics
  • Biosafety
  • Biocomputing
  • Medical biotechnology
  • Molecular biotechnology
  • Genomics
  • Manufacture of biotechnological advanced products
  • Industrial microbiology
  • Molecular pathology
  • Linkage between the academic research and the biotechnological industry / Technology Transfer / Intellectual Property

Application Procedure

The application process undergoes the following stages:

  • Initial revision of the application form and the complementary documents. Verification of the required information, academic level, topic of the internship, signatures, annexes, etc.
  • Evaluation by the Programme Coordinator. If it is approved, it continuous to step three.
  • Evaluation by at least five active researches in the topic, which are selected from the regional and international network of researches that assist the Programme. If the application is approved, it continuous to the fourth step.
  • Definite evaluation by the Training Implementation Committee (TIC) in the UNU in Tokyo. In this stage there could be rejection or approval.

This process is completed in a period of time approximate to three months.

Successful candidates will be given a fix grant depending on the length of their research, the amount should cover for:

  • Flight ticket
  • Accommodation
  • Meals
  • Local transportation and other expenses
  • In addition all Candidates received International Insurance coverage during their Fellowship.

Requirements

In order to apply for a fellowship, the candidates must complete, without exception, the following 3 steps:

Step 1: Download the following documents in PDF format (FAF_Doc_6, FAF_Doc_7, FAF_Doc_8):

Acceptance of conditions of grant by applicant.

Acceptance of conditions of grant by Director of the applicant’s institution.

Medical Report.

Step 2: Print, fill, sign, stamp and scan all the downloaded documents (FAF_Doc_6, FAF_Doc_7, FAF_Doc_8):

Before proceeding to fill the form the applicant should have available in digital format all the following documents:

  • Applicant’s photo
  • Allowed Formats: digitalized document (JPG/GIF) included in the registration form or sent afterwards individually

  • Applicant’s Curriculum Vitae
  • It should be updates and should include publication list. Allowed Format: Microsoft Word.

  • Mentor’s Curriculum Vitae
  • It should be updates and should include publication list. Allowed Format: Microsoft Word.

  • Recommendation letter from the applicant’s supervisor
  • Signed and stamped document printed in official paper with the institution letterhead. Formats allowed: digitalized document (JPG/GIF) / Adobe PDF.

  • Admission letter from the Mentor of the fellowship
  • Signed and stamped document printed in official paper with the institution letterhead. Formats allowed: digitalized document (JPG/GIF) / Adobe PDF.

  • Detailed work chronogram
  • Content of daily activities during the whole period or research or training. Allowed Format: Microsoft Office

  • Acceptance of conditions of grant by applicant (FAF_Doc_6)
  • Signed and stamped document printed in official paper with the institution letterhead. Formats allowed: digitalized document (JPG/GIF) / Adobe PDF.

  • Acceptance of conditions of grant by Director of the applicant’s institution (FAF_Doc_7)
  • Signed and stamped document printed in official paper with the institution letterhead. Formats allowed: digitalized document (JPG/GIF) / Adobe PDF.

  • Medical Report (FAF_Doc_8)
  • Signed and stamped document printed in official paper with the institution letterhead. Formats allowed: digitalized document (JPG/GIF) / Adobe PDF.

  • Document which proves the Counterpart Funds.

Step 3: Once you have all the required documents available in digital format, be sure of been registered in our website to access the electronic version of the application form (Fellowship Application Form - FAF).

Status of the Applications for Fellowships

If you have sent an application and it was approved, contact us as soon as possible to confirm the acceptance and to continue with the next step in awarding the fellowship.

To know the status of your application, enter your account and select the option Applications Status in the navigation menu.

The acronyms that define the status of applications are the followings:

  • AR: Application Received Satisfactorily
  • RI: Initial Revision
  • EV: Evaluation by the Coordinator of the Programme and researchers
  • AP: Approved, you will be contacted as soon as possible
  • RE: Rejected
